Nonmonotonic Sorts for Feature Structures

چکیده

There have been many recent attempts to incorporate defaults into uni cation-based grammar formalisms. What these attempts have in common is that they all lose one of the most desirable properties of feature systems: namely, presentation order independence. This paper describes a method of dealing with defaults that retains order independence. The method works by making a strong distinction between strict and default information. The addition of nonmonotonic sorts allows default information to be carried in the feature structure while retaining a simple, deterministic uni cation operation. Monotonic feature structures are rederived through a satisfaction relation that is abstract in that it depends only on the ordering information for sorts.

User-Defined Nonmonotonicity in Unification-Based Formalisms

A common feature of recent unificationbased grammar formalisms is that they give the user the ability to define his own structures. However, this possibility is mostly limited and does not include nonmonotonic operations. In this paper we show how nonmonotonic operations can also be user-defined by applying default logic (Reiter, 1980) and generalizing previous results on nonmonotonic sorts (Yo...

A Logical Semantics for Nonmonotonic Sorts

Suppose we have a feature system, and we wish to add default values in a well-deened way. We might start with Kasper-Rounds logic, and use Reiter's example to form it into a default logic. Giving a node a default value would be equivalent to saying \if it is consistent for this node to have that value, then it does." Then we could use default theories to describe feature structures. The particu...

Feature Structures and Nonmonotonicity

Unification-based grammar formalisms use feature structures to represent linguistic knowledge. The only operation defined on feature structures, unification, is information-combining and monotonic. Several authors have proposed nonmonotonic extensions of this formalism, as for a linguistically adequate description of certain natural language phenomena some kind of default reasoning seems essent...

Overlay as the Basic Operation for Discourse Processing in a Multimodal Dialogue System

We describe a nonmonotonic operation on typed feature structures { overlay { and show how it is applied to discourse processing in a multimodal dialogue system. A detailed example highlights the necessity and strength of such an operation.
